Ali Dutton’s path to nursing is anything but traditional, but it’s a testament to perseverance and self-discovery. At 34, she’s a wife, mother of two, and a second-year nursing student at LRCC. With 16 years of experience in healthcare, including four as an LNA, Ali decided to further her career and pursue a nursing degree.

Growing up in Nashua, Ali struggled in high school and never thought college would be an option. However, at 30, after being diagnosed with ADHD, she gained clarity about her learning challenges and discovered ways to manage them. “Once I had the diagnosis, I figured out how to learn. It was like a lightbulb went off,” Ali shares. This newfound understanding gave her the confidence to pursue her education and life goals.

Now, Ali aims to become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, driven by her own experiences as a mother. She’s determined to offer not just medical care, but emotional support, becoming the calm in the storm for families facing similar struggles.

Ali chose LRCC for its close-knit community, where she feels connected to both classmates and professors. “I know all my teachers and classmates, and I’ve made lifelong friends here. The teachers understand what it’s like to juggle a family, a job, and everything else life throws at you,” she says.

This personalized approach has been one of the most valuable aspects of her experience. Despite her passion for science, Ali struggled with math, but with the support and guidance of LRCC math professor Julie Morin, she not only overcame this obstacle but also found a role model and a friend.

Ali credits her success to managing her ADHD and mental health. “There were so many things working against me that I didn’t even realize until I was 30. But I want to be the best I can be—for my children and my future patients,” she explains. Her drive to make a difference fuels her passion for nursing. Outside of her studies, Ali enjoys kayaking, camping, and party planning—something she jokes could be her backup career if nursing doesn’t work out!

Ali’s story is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams, especially when driven by a passion to make a real difference. With her compassion, perseverance, and dedication, Ali is sure to leave a lasting impact on nursing and beyond.
