Lakes Region Community College (LRCC) welcomed eleven ambitious first-year students to campus this month as part of the third annual Gateway to College initiative. This immersive, one-week residential experience set the stage for a dynamic start to their academic journeys.
This program, offered at no cost to participants, is designed to equip students with essential college success strategies, foster meaningful connections with peers, and engage them in enriching nightly activities. This year’s cohort benefited from the curriculum’s comprehensive approach, which included earning academic credit for the College Essentials seminar, a cornerstone of the freshman syllabus.
Through their participation, students not only honed their writing skills but also demonstrated remarkable progress in mathematics, with 73% showing an increase in their math scores. In recognition of their hard work and dedication, each student was awarded a $250 scholarship to be applied towards their first-year tuition.
“The Gateway to College program remains a cornerstone of our commitment to student success,” said Melissa Ballard, Director of Student Success at LRCC. “We will continue to support these future firefighters, auto technicians, chefs, graphic designers, and information security analysts in achieving academic and career success.”
The excitement continues to build as these promising students prepare to begin their formal classes on August 26th. LRCC looks forward to supporting their continued growth and academic excellence throughout their college journey.
