Two Lakes Region Community College (LRCC) Culinary Arts students were recognized for their dedication, leadership, and commitment to the hospitality industry during the Lakes Region Tourism Association’s Annual Meeting, held recently at Hart’s Turkey Farm.
The annual event brings together tourism and hospitality professionals from across the Lakes Region to celebrate achievements within the industry and recognize emerging talent. This year, LRCC students Grace Mairano and William Hayman were honored with prestigious awards that acknowledge their accomplishments both in and out of the classroom.
Grace Mairano Receives Mildred A. Beech Scholarship

Grace Mairano, a graduating senior in LRCC’s Culinary Arts program, received the Mildred A. Beech Scholarship, an annual award presented by the Lakes Region Tourism Association to a student pursuing a degree in tourism, hospitality, or culinary arts.
Mairano began her journey at LRCC as a part-time student while working as a server at The Taylor Home. As her passion for food and cooking grew, she transitioned into back-of-house operations through a summer co-op experience at Trillium in downtown Laconia.
In addition to her academic and professional pursuits, Mairano has been an active leader on campus. She is a two-year member of the LRCC Hospitality Club and currently serves as the club’s president. She has represented the college at several events, including Senator Jeanne Shaheen’s Experience NH event in Washington, D.C.
Looking ahead, Mairano hopes to combine her culinary expertise and leadership skills by one day owning her own business.
William Hayman Receives Mel Borrin Award

William Hayman was honored with the Mel Borrin Award, an annual recognition presented by the Lakes Region Tourism Association to an outstanding student who demonstrates dedication, professionalism, and promise within the hospitality industry.
Named in memory of Melvin “Mel” Borrin, a longtime leader and supporter of the Lakes Region tourism community, the award reflects the values of leadership, service, and excellence that Borrin championed throughout his career.
Hayman has steadily worked toward earning his associate degree in Culinary Arts while balancing full-time employment as a line cook at the Wolfeboro Inn. With 16 years of industry experience, he brings professionalism, efficiency, and real-world expertise to the LRCC kitchens and has become an integral member of the program.
Hayman is a two-year member of the LRCC Hospitality Club and currently serves as the club’s treasurer. He has also represented LRCC at numerous events, including Senator Shaheen’s Experience NH event in Washington, D.C.
After graduation, Hayman hopes to continue advancing his career in the Lakes Region hospitality industry and ultimately serve as a kitchen manager at a local restaurant.
Recognizing Future Hospitality Leaders
The recognition of Mairano and Hayman highlights the talent, dedication, and leadership emerging from LRCC’s Culinary Arts program. Through their commitment to academic excellence, industry experience, and community involvement, both students exemplify the next generation of hospitality professionals who will help shape the future of the Lakes Region’s tourism and culinary industries.
