As a non‑traditional student in my late 30s with three children and a full‑time job, flexibility and online course availability were essential when choosing a college. I chose LRCC because it offers a strong, affordable program close to home, along with online and hybrid options that make returning to school realistic. Being able to balance school, work, and family responsibilities played a major role in my decision.

I’m currently working as an Operations Manager at FedEx, so I’m balancing a full‑time leadership role with coursework and raising children. It’s not a small challenge. LRCC’s flexible scheduling and online learning opportunities have made that balance manageable and sustainable.
I chose the Computer Information Systems (CIS) program because it offers a well‑rounded mix of technical, analytical, and business‑focused IT skills. The program’s practical, hands‑on approach, combined with its online course availability, has been especially valuable. It has allowed me to build relevant, real‑world skills while continuing to manage responsibilities outside the classroom.
After completing my studies at LRCC, I plan to transfer to the University of New Hampshire (UNH) to pursue a four‑year degree and continue my path into the information technology field. I’m interested in pursuing IT opportunities either with my current employer, FedEx, or with a new organization. While my current role is operational, it closely aligns with my long‑term goals by strengthening my experience in systems, logistics, problem‑solving, and leadership — skills that directly support a future career in IT.
LRCC has been instrumental in preparing me for this next step by providing a strong foundation in computer information systems, including networking, operating systems, troubleshooting, and problem‑solving. I also make regular use of campus resources such as the library and student support services. Having access to these resources remotely has been especially helpful in staying organized, completing assignments, and staying on track while juggling multiple commitments.
The support I’ve received from LRCC staff and faculty has made a meaningful difference in my success. My academic advisor has been particularly hands‑on, working closely with me to ensure my academic plan fits my work schedule, family responsibilities, and need for online courses. She also takes a genuine interest in my growth in the IT field, offering guidance and encouragement as I plan my next steps.
To students considering LRCC, I would encourage them to see it as a smart and affordable way to start their college journey. The college’s flexibility — especially its online learning options — allows students to grow academically without the heavy financial burden of jumping straight into a four‑year program. LRCC is also an excellent option for non‑traditional students who need to balance school with work, family, or other responsibilities.
The best part of LRCC is its commitment to flexibility and student support at every stage of life. As a student with a full‑time job, children, and the need for online coursework, I’ve felt consistently encouraged rather than limited. LRCC truly meets students where they are and helps them move forward with confidence.
