Massage Therapy Course Descriptions

LMST1100 Spa and Hygiene Techniques CL1 L2 CR2
The student is introduced to several different techniques related to the spa industry. Students will be introduces to Aromatherapy and Essential Oils, making their own products and implementing them within the spa industry. Students are expected to meet the grading requirements as set by the grading system. (2010)

LMST1110 Ethics of Human Touch CL1 L0 CR1
This course will focus upon specific ethics of professional massage, including the code of ethics of the major organizations (AMTA, ABMP) and the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTM). The NH rules governing massage will also be addressed (RSA 328B).(2010)

LMST1120 Kinesiology CL2 L2 CR3
The students will experience a variety of approaches. The miniature skeletons will help in learning the insertions and origins of the muscles. How we use the muscles to move joints and the types of muscles and joints that are needed. The term Kinesiology means the study of motion. In this course we will do just that. Your own body is a laboratory and we will look at it, and how the muscles and joints function in movement, the terminology, anatomy, landmarks, and skeletal structure. Powers of observation and palpation will help us in our fundamental movement quest.(2010)

LMST1130 Massage Pathology CL3 L0 CR3
This course will focus on common health problems and indications and contraindications for massage therapy. Hygienic methods to prevent the spread of disease will be reinforced.(2010)

LMST1200 Massage Therapy Principles and Practices CL3 L2 CR4
This course introduces the student to the history and theory of massage. It includes skill development in the art and science of massage therapy. This course consists of lecture, demonstration and hands on experience. Students learn the fundamentals of full body massage, including palpitation skills. Students are introduced to correct body mechanics, injury prevention, draping methods, and charting. The five basic strokes of massage are introduced. (2010)

LMST1210 Massage Therapy Principles and Practices II CL3 L2 CR4
The students will learn the principles methods of Trigger Point Therapy (TP) and Cross Fiber Friction (XFF); including assessment, treatment and common symptomologies. The students are required to perform these skills in a lb setting (massage). The students will also be required to engage in practice massage sessions outside of the scheduled class hours in a Supervised Student Clinic. The practice of proper draping will be taught in class and clinic. Additional Swedish instruction including Lymphatic Drainage, Reflexology, and Circulatory Massage Techniques.(2010)

LMST1300 Clinical Introduction CL0 L2 CR1
This course is a hands on course. Clients have paid a reduced fee for a student massage. Students will apply techniques and procedures in a clinic setting, supervised by a licensed instructor. The student will document all sessions. Clinic hours are designed to be a learning tool. The hours put in clinic are out of the normal classroom schedule and are made by appointment.(2010)

LMST2140 Business Management & Practices for Massage Therapy CL2 L0 CR2
This course offers the foundational skills and tools for opening a private practice that include, but are not limited to, marketing, finding office space, billing, communication skills, and the use of office equipment.(2010)

LMST2150 Sports Performance Massage Fundamentals I CL2 L4 CR3
The students will experience hands on training of athletes involved in various sports. They will learn about the events of a sports meet; pre-event, inter-event, post-event, and maintenance (recuperation). We will discuss the events of a sports meet, the goals of these events, the approaches for each event, the timing of each event, and the treatment of each event. The students will practice the treatment of each event on themselves and athletes that have been brought in for the class. The goal is for the student therapist to be able to apply their knowledge and massage techniques on actual participants. There are a number of local sports events and Triathlons that the student therapist is expected to attend and work to help them obtain the practice. The students also learn what is needed to go and work at an event and will create a personal checklist.(2010)

LMST2220 Massage Therapy Principles and Practices III CL3 L2 CR4
This course is a continuation of Principles and Practices of Massage Therapy I & II. Special populations will be addressed including the elderly, pregnant women, children and infants. (The focus will also include populations for massage therapy.) Students will be applying the various strokes and information that they have learned in specialized application, as well as Hydrotherapy. Students will also learn First Aid and CPR.(2010)

LMST2320 Clinical Introduction III CL0 L6 CR3

LSCI1290 Nutrition for Health and Fitness CL3 L0 CR3
This course is a study of the nutrients and how the body handles the nutrients throughout the life cycle. Topics include metabolism of macro- and micro-nutrients; physiological benefits of an optimal diet with exercise; behavioral issues related to eating; energy balance and weight control; and disease prevention strategies related to diet. Life style behaviors, which optimize nutritional health and wellness, are also emphasized.

LSCI1310 Nutrition for Health and Fitness Lab CL0 L2 CR1
This lab course is designed to reinforce selected topics covered in the lecture portion of Nutrition for Health and Fitness including energy requirements and ideal weight, chemical composition of common foods, chemical aspects of digestion, and several other topics. (Prerequisite: Math: LMAT1230 OR LMAT1280 OR LMAT1320 OR LMAT1370 OR LMAT1420. Math prerequisite may also b fulfilled by competence demonstrated on math placement exam; LSCI1290 may be taken concurrently)

LSCI1450 Anatomy & Physiology I CL3 L2 CR4
An introduction to the structure and function of the human body. Includes a review of the chemical and biological basis of living organisms and the anatomy and physiology of the integumentary, musculoskeletal and nervous systems. Integrated lab experience is provided using anatomical models and dissection of selected specimens, as well as observation of histologic preparations. (Prerequisite: LSCI1440 or successful completion of high school biology with lab within 5 years; Co-requisite: Math: LMAT1230 OR LMAT1280 OR LMAT1320 OR LMAT1350 OR LMAT1400. Math co-requisite may also be fulfilled by competence demonstrated on math placement exam or POI.)

LSCI1460 Anatomy & Physiology II CL3 L2 CR4
Sequential study of the structure and function of the human body. Includes the anatomy and physiology of the blood and lymphatic systems, respiratory system, circulatory system, excretory system, fluid and electrolyte balance and reproductive system. Laboratory work parallels lecture topics, and consists of selected exercises in the study of anatomical models, dissection and physiological experimentation. (Prerequisite: LSCI1450; Co-requisite: Math: LMAT1230 OR LMAT1280 OR LMAT1320 OR LMAT1350 OR LMAT1400. Math co-requisite may also be fulfilled by competence demonstrated on math placement exam or POI.)
