Lakes Region Community College (LRCC) is offering a workshop on how to design, plan and build a home that will save 50% or more on fossil fuel costs, and be a sustainable structure for generations. "Applying the designs and plans learned about in LRCC’s Passive Solar Architecture Workshop will delight all who see them," says Michael Greene (Deerfield), Workshop Instructor. "Homes designed using the principles and techniques discussed will also be quite livable." Greene brings 40 years of experience designing, building, writing and teaching about passive solar architecture to the College’s Passive Solar Workshop.

Greene will present the basic principles of direct gain passive solar design and construction for the New England climate. Workshop material will be geared to the professional as well as owner builders. In-depth discussions will include site evaluation, how to orient a building, rules for solar planning, heat transfer and air movement, building materials, structural systems, and how to think sustainability. Two classroom sessions will be followed by a field trip to a number of passive solar homes. "Discussion and flow of ideas promises to be lively," says Greene who incorporates a colorful sense of humor into his presentations.

LRCC’s Passive Solar Workshop will be held on Thursday, February 18 and 25, 5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., with the field trip on Saturday, March 6, at a time to be designated by Workshop participants. The cost is $199.00.
