Wool Enters Electrical Systems Installation and Maintenance Degree Program

A two-time winner of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, a Master’s Degree in Mathematics Education, 33 years of teaching and coaching experience, participation in the National Science Foundation, need we say more?  Oh, Alan Wool (Gilford) is also a New Hampshire Community Technical College Laconia Electrical Systems Installation and Maintenance (ESIM) Associate Degree honor student.

“If someone knows me, I am not the type of person who can just sit around,” says Wool, who also serves as an adjunct professor of mathematics at Lakes Region CC and Southern New Hampshire University.  “I need to do something and I like the challenges; the ESIM program has worked out well… I’ve learned a great deal.”

Wool retired from teaching mathematics after 31 years at Gilford High School.  He was “trying to figure out what he wanted to do,” had a conversation with Lakes Region CC Academic Affairs Vice President, Tom Goulette (Belmont), and signed up in 2005.

“Alan has brought a tremendous amount of experience and diversity to the classroom,” says Goulette.  “He’s a classic example of the community college student seeking a new career path… an excellent, excellent gentleman!”

Last summer, Wool got his ESIM cooperative education experience working with Giguere Electric, supervised by Will Dockham (Gilmanton), who also teaches electricity.  Wool is now considering teaching in the electrical profession as a result of his experiences with Dockham.

When asked if he had any words of advice, Wool responded enthusiastically.  “Don’t let your age, disability, or anything else hold you back,” says Wool.  “If you want to try something, then by all means go for it.  There are many avenues one can latch onto at Lakes Region CC and people there will help out tremendously… just give them a call!”
