LRCC’s Men’s Basketball Wins Tournament
2/22/10
The Lakes Region Community College’s (LRCC) basketball team took a doubleheader to win the Click Invitational Tournament at Landmark College (LC) on Saturday, February 20. In a seesaw tilt, the Centurions defeated the LC Sharks of Putney, Vermont, 88-81, with the aid of the clutch shooting, shutdown defensive play of George Chatman (Weirs ). Leading scorer, Kris Dumont (Franklin), capped an exciting comeback from 15 points down with a dramatic, last second 3-point shot to tie the score and send the game into overtime.
In overtime, the duo of Jamel Thorogood (Weirs) and Phil Cowels (Moultonborough) proved too much for the Sharks to defend. Patrick Mosa (Franklin) provided the interior defense, John Bonnell (Vermont) showed energy and opportunistic offense, and Taylor Masotta (Derry) was a space eater and tenacious defender.
In an anti-climactic second game, LRCC proved too fast and too athletic for Hampshire College (HC) of Amherst, Massachusetts. Maintaining a steady 10 point cushion, LRCC received full court play from Thorogood and outstanding 3-point shooting from Cowels. Pat Mosa and Masotta outplayed the much bigger, inside players for HC. Bonnell ran the floor effectively while Chatman and Dumont scored efficiently and defended aggressively.
At the tournament’s conclusion, the trophy was awarded to LRCC after winning 87-77, by Landmark’s Athletic Director, James Austin.
