Cinematography Workshop

Dr. Opel is the Media Production Area Head of the Department of Communication at Florida State. Dr. Opel will bring his expertise in cinematography to Lakes Region CC for two weeks this July.

Week 1
Introduction to Digital Video Production
This course is a video production class emphasizing the fundamental skills of digital video including shooting, audio recording, lighting, and non-linear editing. This will be an intensive short course that will provide the basic skills necessary to begin creating high quality digital media products. Students will use their own cameras to learn the elements of shooting. Microphones, light kits and non-linear editing software will be demonstrated and students will have the opportunity to work hands-on with these tools. By the end of the class, students will be able to successfully operate a video camera, microphones and lighting equipment in technically competent and creative ways and will have an introduction to non-linear video editing software. Supplemental course reading materials will be made available on-line. Students will be expected to provide their own blank video tapes. Maximum 10 students.

Week 2
Documentary Video Production
This class will explore the contemporary world of documentary video production with an overview of the history and major trends in documentary production. Students will learn the planning and production process necessary to create their own documentaries. The history and folklore of central NH combined with the natural beauty of the region make this an excellent place to create documentaries. The course will combine critical viewing skills with practical instruction in documentary production. This class will be organized as a workshop, requiring active participation and collaboration among the class members. Students will use their own cameras in this class and supplemental production tools will be available on a limited basis. Maximum 10 students.
