Energy Services And Technology on Transportation
Use the following resources to help you make environmentally sound transportation choices:
Modern combustion engines use 75% of the energy in a gallon of gas just to make the engine work, only 25% actually makes the wheels turn. Every gallon burned directly emits 19 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere; if you add in refining and transportation that increases to 24 pounds. Most vehicles reach their peak efficiency somewhere between 40 and 60 miles per hour. Every mile you go over 60mph costs between 4 and 10 cents. Currently this sector of US energy use contributes 14% of annual greenhouse emissions. Trains can be a far more efficient means of transporting goods and people as well as reducing highway ‘congestion’ and angst. |
